You know you’re a farmer when…

…you begin to talk about the weather as more than just passing conversation… and you begin to follow the weather like some folks follow baseball or Nascar… and you begin dreaming about the weather and creating elaborate rituals designed to make it rain.
This isn’t the first time I’ve mentioned how hot and dry we’ve been, and though our pastures have been suffering, our crops have been holding steady with very minimal irrigation. And we’ve been able to harvest even the little rain we’ve had off the barn roof, which is a nice, large surface area. Just a third of an inch is enough to fill three 55 gallon barrels! So overall we feel pretty grateful. Especially when we consider that we’re not the only folks experiencing challenging weather patterns.
Here are the weather headlines from today’s CNN weather page:
- Oklahomans flee as oily flood closes in
- Plains floods carry oil slick, prolong evacuations
- Texas Sees Record June Rainfall
- Flood evacuees head for home, may find danger there
- Washout continues in Texas, Oklahoma
- Eleven dead in Texas floods; more rain expected
- Severe storms forecast for Upper Great Lakes
- Deadly heat wave persists in Europe
- High temps to scorch Southwest, Plains
- Storms to hit Midwest; Southwest scorching
Humbling, aren’t they? Nothing like a heavy dose of perspective along with my morning coffee.
I’ll be thinking of those folks out in Oklahoma and Texas and Europe as I raindance my way out to the barn this morning, praying for the rain that may fall tonight and tomorrow.
