Poultry has arrived!

chicksOur first round of poultry arrived on Thursday, April 12th, and Friday, April 13th. We received White Chinese Geese, Rouen duck, Narragansett and Royal Palm turkey poults, Delaware chicks, Ameraucana chicks, and slow growing Cornish chicks. Despite this cold weather, they all seem to be thriving and growing well. They’ll continue to brood for a few more weeks before being put out on pasture.turkeys

In the meantime, we’re busy building our new mobile laying coop that will provide secure night housing for our laying flock and integrate them into our pasture rotation, giving the winter coop and pasture area a much needed 6 month rest. This rotation and rest helps ensure the health of the soil and the animals by breaking the pathogen cycle and providing a widespread application of manure fertilization rather than a concentrated buildup. We’ll post pictures of our mobile coop as soon as it’s finished. We think our hens will be very pleased with their summer cottage!
